UPSC Age Limit, Eligibility, Qualification, Attempts
The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) is one of the most prestigious exams in India, serving as the gateway to some of the most respected administrative services. To apply for the exam, candidates must meet specific eligibility criteria. These parameters, including age limit, nationality, and educational qualifications, determine whether an individual is eligible to apply for the exam.
The UPSC age limit for General category candidates is 21 to 32 years. To be eligible for the UPSC examination, candidates must meet the age criteria. Specifically, candidates must be at least 21 years old and not older than 32 years on that date.
UPSC Age Relaxation
The UPSC age limit can be relaxed in certain cases:
1. SC/ST Candidates: 5 years relaxation.
2. OBC Candidates: 3 years relaxation.
3. Defence Services Personnel: 3 years relaxation for those disabled in operations.
4. Ex-servicemen (ECOs/SSCOs): 5 years relaxation for those with at least 5 years of service.
5. PwBD Candidates: 10 years relaxation for categories like blindness, deafness, locomotor disability, etc.

UPSC CSE Educational Qualification Criteria
The UPSC CSE Eligibility requires candidates to meet the following academic qualifications:
1. Degree Requirement: Candidates must hold a degree from a Government-recognized University or an equivalent qualification.
2. Final Year Students: Candidates in their final year of graduation or awaiting results can apply for the UPSC Prelims. However, they must submit proof of having passed the exam when applying for the UPSC Mains.
3. Technical Qualifications: Candidates with professional or technical qualifications recognized by the Government as equivalent to a degree are eligible.
4. Medical Students: Candidates who have completed the final year of MBBS but have not yet finished their internship can apply for the UPSC CSE, provided they submit a course completion certificate from the concerned university/institution along with their Mains application.
UPSC Eligibility - Nationality Criteria
For IAS, IPS and IFS:
The candidate must be a citizen of India.
For All Other Services:
The candidate must be either:
1. A citizen of India, or
2. A citizen of Nepal, or
3. A citizen of Bhutan, or
4. A Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1st January 1962 intending to settle in India permanently, or
5. A person of Indian origin (PIO) who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Ethiopia, Zaire, and Vietnam, intending to settle in India permanently.
Candidates who are a citizen of Nepal, Bhutan and Tibetan Refugee must furnish a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India. They can appear for the exam before obtaining the certificate of eligibility, but they will receive the offer of appointment only after the Government of India issues the certificate.
Number of Attempts in UPSC
The number of attempts allowed for the UPSC Civil Services Examination varies based on the category of the candidate. Here are the attempt limits:
1. General Category: 6 attempts until the age of 32 years.
2. OBC Candidates: 9 attempts until the age of 35 years.
3. SC/ST Candidates: Unlimited attempts until the age of 37 years.
4. Persons with Benchmark Disability (PwBD): 9 attempts until the age of 42 years.
5. EWS Category: 6 attempts until the age of 32 years.
